Why a model answers like an assistant
Separate following instructions from verifying facts.
A pretrained base model learns patterns for continuing text. Instruction tuning adds training on request-response examples to shape helpful responses. Base models can sometimes answer questions too; the distinction is their training and typical behavior, not an absolute ability boundary. Neither label guarantees truth.
Choose a scenario to compare the task and reasoning.
Training on instruction-response examples can make following requests more consistent. Results still depend on the model and prompt.
